Do Ice Dams guarantee a leak or is just a risk? We have some now and had them before but no leaks.?

House built in 1920, high pitched roof, about 45 degrees. Ice mostly confined to gutters. Little snow remains up there, but 4-5 feet still on the ground. No visible leaks at this time.
